People

The population of Finland is 5.4 million. Population density is low, only 15.7 people per square kilometre. Most of the population is concentrated in the south, especially in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, which is a home to 1.3 million people. Other large cities are Espoo, Tampere, Vantaa and Turku in the south and Oulu in the north.

The life expectancy has increased rapidly and today Finns live longer than ever before. The life expectancy for a girl born in 2010 is little over 83 years and for a boy almost 77 years. 20 years ago, girls were expected to live for 79 years and boys 70 years.

The age structure in Finland is challenging. The population is aging quite rapidly. There were over 255,000 persons aged 80 and over in Finland at the end of 2010. The number has grown five-fold over the past 40 years.
