Finland increases input on behalf of equality in Afghanistan

Finland and Afghanistan signed on 21 June 2011  a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in implementing of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and other resolutions  concerning Women, Peace and Security.

The Finnish-Afghan cooperation aims at enhancing women’s role and decision-making capabilities with regard to conflict prevention and resolution, peace-building, and to significantly improve conditions that directly affect women’s security.

The key partner on the Afghan side will be the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Through a twinning process, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan and Finland will facilitate the implementation of the principles of the UNSC Resolutions throughout the Afghan Government and develop together a National Action Plan on the UNSCR’s concerning Women, Peace, and Security.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Mr. Zalmay Rassoul, the Afghan Foreign Minister, and Dr. Pauli Järvenpää, Finland’s Ambassador to Afghanistan.
